As seasoned hitchhikers, you might think we stick out our thumb, armed with a shield of patience and motivation, ready to brave the seemingly endless minutes of uncertainty and roller coasters of emotions going from hope to deception with each car that rides past you. We never really got used to it. Each minute standing there in that uncomfortable stretched-arm position seems eternal. Your best fake smile you put up becomes stiff, your shoulder starts to hurt and no matter how hard you try to keep it fun, monotony will always be the winner of the game.

The bathtub of Patagonia

As much as we’ve been running away from routine, it begins installing itself along our hike. Find a spot to pitch our tent, unpack our bags, set up the tent, blow up the mattresses, cook, .. all before the sun sets. In the morning we would start over again but backwards, like an old videotape where you’d press the rewind button. Cook, deflate the mattresses, unpitch our tent, repack our bags, leave our spot and hit the trail again just when the sun rises. But every location is different, every sunset and sunrise has different colors. The landscapes and nature change at the blink of an eye. So, even though you repeat the same things over and over again, they don’t feel like routine at all.

The Wilderness of the Arizona Trail

It is 7:30pm, day 4. We’ve already been walking for over 50 miles, set about 117,000 steps. Once again we hurried in our tent seeking its comfort and absurd feeling of security. But this time it is different. As darkness is surrounding us, so are the agonizing howls and yips of the coyotes calling one to another. This, in addition to the two snakes we’ve seen today, makes us more aware than ever that we’re setting foot on their grounds and that in their world, we are vulnerable.
